I.K. Aivazovsky

Ivan Aivazovsky was born in Feodosia in 1817 into an Armenian merchant family. In addition to Ivan, the family had four children, three sisters and a brother, who later became a monk.

Even in his childhood, young Ivan showed an interest in drawing, and also had musical abilities, thanks to which he learned to play the violin on his own. First, he graduated from the district school, then entered the Simferopol gymnasium, where they also noticed his talent. And after the gymnasium, he was able to enroll with the help of the mayor of the Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1833.Aivazovsky Museum in Feodosia

Aivazovsky studied with Maxim Vorobiev, with Philip Taner, with Alexander Zauerveyd and was able to graduate from the academy two years ahead of time.He was sent to the Crimea for independent work, and then on a business trip abroad.

During his life, Aivazovsky was married twice, first he married Yulia Grevs, with whom they gave birth to four daughters. But since Ivan Konstantinovich did not want to live in the capital, they separated from Yulya. Later he met Anna Nikitichna, who was 44 years younger than him.

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky died at the age of 82 in his native city, in Feodosia, on April 19 in 1900, and was buried in the Armenian church.

Picture gallery

The largest collection of paintings by the great artist is represented in the Aivazovsky Museum in Feodosia. The entire collection is located in two buildings, one of which is the main exhibition, and in the other opened the scientific department of the gallery.

In addition, where the scientific department is located, the biblical motifs of the artist are presented, as well as the works of the students and followers of the artist.

After Aivazovsky visited a business trip to Europe, he returned to St. Petersburg by an already famous artist. In the city he was able to get acquainted with Pushkin, Belinsky, constantly received new orders for painting pictures and often went to various salons.

But since Ivan Konstantinovich loved the sea, and this was his greatest passion and love, in 1844 he returned to his small but native city Theodosia.

In 1845, he decided to build a house on the coast, and a little later he opened an art gallery here, which was the first in the Russian Empire. 49 canvases were placed in it, which gradually became more and more, and later Aivazovsky had to add another building, as the work ceased to fit. Gradually the apartment building became a museum, and after death in 1900 the gallery passed into the "hands" of the city, because it was bequeathed to him by the artist himself in 1892.House Museum Aivazovsky

When Soviet power was established on the peninsula, the Aivazovsky Museum in Feodosia was used for the departments of the Cheka and the Red Army, many paintings were heavily damaged at that time, and some were completely stolen. In 1922, the gallery received the status of a state museum, where the Museum of Art Values was also opened.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the time of the Great Patriotic War, when pictures of Aivazovsky were miraculously saved, and all thanks to the director Nikolay Barsamov. At the cost of incredible efforts, he was first able to bring the paintings to Krasnodar, then he was assigned to transport them to Stalingrad, but Nikolay Barsamov did not obey the order and sent the artist's canvases to Yerevan. At the cost of his life, Barsamov managed to keep Aivazovsky's work, although he knew that he could be punished for disobeying the order, but if the pictures were sent to Stalingrad, then they would be lost there forever.

When the Crimea was liberated in 1944, the paintings from Yerevan were brought back, and they no longer left the city.

As mentioned above, the entire Aivazovsky Museum in Feodosia is located in two buildings. Interestingly, the work, which was written more than 6 thousand, exhibited in the museum as they are written. This allows not only to see the works of art, but also to trace how the author’s style has changed and how his skills have been improved.Aivazovsky paintings
