BMW 320: technical specifications and fuel consumption
The BMW-320 car, whose photos are presented on the page, the E21 index, the 3rd model range, the accompanying models - 320i, 315, 316, 318, appeared in 1976 as an economical vehicle in the context of an incipient fuel crisis. At the same time, the characteristics of the new car were at the level of the top models of the European car industry of that period.
Start of production
On the BMW-320i, instead of the standard Solex carburetor, a Bosch K-Jetronic injector was installed, and the engine for the entire range of these models was a reliable and proven MA10. In this configuration, the BMW-320 was produced until 1977, then the new six-cylinder power unit, created specifically for the 3rd BMW, was installed on the car. The new engine became an intermediate link between the compact four-cylinder M10 and the promising three-liter M20 and M60.
At the end of 1979, the body parameters of the E21 changed. This was due primarily to the tightness of the engine compartment of the car, which did not allow for the placement of the latest six-cylinder engines of the latest generation.The fan did not fit, there was not enough space for the radiator. The engine compartment was extended at the expense of the cabin, which did not suffer from this, but on the contrary, it became more convenient.
The upgraded E21 body existed until 1983, after which the E30 was created to replace it, the exterior of which became the basis for all subsequent modifications to BMW.
BMW-320 and other models of the 3rd series in 1988 were restyled, the purpose of which was to radically change the appearance of the car. The changes affected the rear of the body, the configuration of the contours became more modern. New lights in the best way highlighted the futuristic outlines of the trunk. Half of the red ceiling was integrated into the rear wing, half into the luggage cover. The new solution made it possible to combine the stop signal with a diode light chain and emergency lamps. The front optics also changed its shape, the block-headlight of two mini-pliers took its rightful place in the frontal sector of the car, partially capturing the front fender. The contours of the headlights gave the car the appearance of a "super-predator" and left no doubt about its power.
During the restyling process, a new injection engine was installed on the BMW-320 model, with a cylinder capacity of 1.6 liters and a power of 100 hp.The engine did not pay off, and it was soon replaced by a standard three-liter power unit. Then the updated version of the BMW-320, bodywhich allowed to modify the car in all directions, began to produce in the form of a convertible. Sliding roof was canvas or thin aluminum.
A new version
In early 1992, the BMW-320 (diesel version) was presented as a two-door coupe with the latest generation engine. The motor was distinguished by controlled injection of a combustible mixture and electronic adjustment of the mode of operation of the injectors. The transmission was offered in two types: mechanical six-speed, with speed switching in the mode of constant hydraulic support or 4-speed automatic. The fuel consumption of a BMW-320 in this combination of engine and transmission was only 8 liters per hundred kilometers along the highway. The efficiency of the car was also noticeable when driving around the city.
In the next, in 1993, the characteristics of the BMW-320improved, the car received another engine, a high-speed turbodiesel, which accelerated the car to 214 km / h. Initially, this power unit was installed on a convertible with an easily removable aluminum top, but high speeds, as it turned out, were contraindicated for a car without a roof.Thus, the new engine "registered" under the hood of a BMW-320 sedan.
In December 1994, a modification with a hatchback body appeared. It was a BMW-320 Compact, with small economical engines rated at 102, 90, 115 and 140 hp. The three-door hatchback in the modification of the 328i showed good handling characteristics, and sport features were first revealed in this car. The model was positioned as a youth-student version, but its price was much higher than the scholarship of students and graduate students. Therefore, in order to reduce the cost of the car, a simplified rear suspension was applied. The complex arms of the pendulum type were abolished, and instead of them they installed the simplest dependent suspension in the form of a continuous beam.
Regular restyling of BMW 3 Series models began in 1998, the changes again affected the power plant and external characteristics. All modifications of the BMW-320 model, the car’s photo confirms this, the exterior has been updated, changes have also occurred in the cabin, and the level of comfort has significantly increased.
But the main, truly revolutionary changes were waiting for the car in 2000. There is a trend of sportiness,This meant the use of new high-speed engines, flexible chassis parameters and good aerodynamic performance of the car. Technical characteristics of the BMW-320 began to develop in the direction of dynamics and maneuverability. But at the same time there were still a lot of potential buyers who preferred the old style, namely comfort and calm measured movement on good roads.
Thus, the production of BMW cars was divided into two directions. Cars of the type M Sport got off of one conveyor, Comfort and Top Comfort from another. The difference was significant, the sports version was equipped with deep seats with a flattering back, 17-inch wheels, a reduced-diameter steering wheel, and a highly sensitive accelerator.
In the Top Comfort version of the cars, on the contrary, soft comfortable seats with velor upholstery and electric heating were installed. There was a microclimate in the car that could be changed at will, and the temperature was controlled from any seat by remote control. Well-calculated intensity of the relaxing interior lighting complements the picture of the interior. The appearance of these cars was also different.Ahead was an expensive xenon optics, the windshield wipers were turned on by a rain sensor signal, exterior mirrors and power windows on all doors were equipped with electric drives. In the summer of 2000, the model range of the 3 series in the BMW-320 cluster was supplemented with all-wheel drive trim levels 330X and 330XH with a new engine. A transfer box and a locking center differential were installed on the machine. The transmission resembled the classics used on the X5 off-road vehicles, with the only difference being that BMW used an automatic differentiation system, which allowed the redistribution of traction forces depending on the adhesion of wheels to the road surface.
