Why is it snowing?

Winter is a very beautiful season. It is especially beautiful when glittering white snowflakes slowly fall from the sky. Looking at them, we are surprised to notice that they have a regular geometric shape, where each face is verified with incredible accuracy. Have you ever thought why it snows, rains or hail? Let's reflect on this together.

Origin of snow

At school in the course of natural history, you probably had to hear about such a phenomenon as the "water cycle in nature." Simply put, water evaporates from bodies of water, rivers, lakes, seas and oceans, and in the form of steam rises into the layers of the atmosphere. When the temperature becomes subzero, the vapor particles freeze and turn into microscopic ice crystals. They are so small that they freely hover in the air. When they collide with other pieces of ice, they stick together among themselves, this happens many times, and, eventually, a snowflake is formed. When it reaches a certain size, then under the weight of its weight falls to the ground - it begins to snow. If the air temperature is above zero, then the steam does not turn into ice, and it does not snow, but rain. Now it is clear why it is snowing in winter, because the temperature at this time of the year is usually below zero.

Scientists have shown that snowfall and other sediments have not only physical, but also biological features. Bacteria and microorganisms are blown into the atmosphere by the wind; there they cannot stay for a long time. They use snowflakes or raindrops as a kind of transport and with their help hit the ground. Researchers collected samples of snow in different parts of the earth and found bacteria or their traces everywhere. Due to the presence of microorganisms, snow may not always be pure white. Snowflakes may have a greenish, bluish or grayish tint.

Snowflake shape

Snowflakes are not like pieces of ice - they are neither transparent nor solid. This is due to the fact that they consist of microscopic ice crystals, which are reflected from each other, and thus a white color is obtained. The low hardness of the snowflake is due to the fact that the crystals of which it consists are very small and cannot withstand any pressure. If you carefully examine the snowflakes, you will see that they all have a hexagonal shape. This is a mandatory rule in snow geometry.Crystals that make up a snowflake can have different shapes: pointed, square, rectangular, etc. You will not find in the world two identical snowflakes, each of them is unique!
